About

Not “special” rights. Equal rights.

Currently, nearly 2 dozen states and almost 300 municipalities across the country have adopted laws to protect LGBTQ people from discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. Neither Denton nor Texas is one of these.

Unfortunately, that means that right here in our own community, a person can lose their job, their home, or be denied services simply for who they love or who they are. It isn’t right. But it’s legal.

This needs to change. Though Texas doesn’t have any protections statewide, there are 5 cities that have already successfully passed comprehensive non-discrimination ordinances in our state (Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, Fort Worth, and even Plano!) to protect their LGBTQ residents from discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations.

With your help, we can make sure that no one will be treated unfairly because of who they love or who they are. Discrimination is not a Denton value, and our laws should reflect that.

Tell your story. Pledge your support as an individual, a business, or a place of worship. Get involved. Together we can make Denton, TX a more equal place for everyone.

Discrimination in Employment:

“In six studies conducted between 1996 and 2006, 20 to 57 percent of transgender respondents said they experienced employment discrimination, including being fired, denied a promotion or harassed. Though even more difficult to measure, transgender people also face incredible barriers as job applicants.” (source)

Discrimination in Housing:

43% of clients served by homeless drop-in centers identify as LGBTQ. This disproportionately high number is due in part to unfair treatment in both employment and in housing. (source)

Discrimination in Public:

“The 2015 United States Transgender Survey found that, among transgender people who visited a place of public accommodation where staff knew or believed they were transgender, nearly one in three experienced discrimination or harassment—including being denied equal services or even being physically attacked.” (source)

Together we can change this.
